Imperial Highway Bridge Wraps Up Early

The new bridge eliminates wait time for drivers caused by passing trains and improves pedestrian safety
ORANGE – All lanes on the Imperial Highway bridge are now open to drivers as the project wrapped up nearly one year ahead of schedule.
Construction on the $91 million project began in February 2007 and since June, two lanes have been available to drivers as workers finished constructing the bridge and pedestrian ramp. The opening marks a milestone for improving the movement of goods from our ports by separating drivers from rail traffic.
“This bridge is long overdue. I can get to work quicker now that I no longer have to wait for trains.” said Nancy Miles a Yorba Linda resident.
Separating Imperial Highway from the existing rail crossing at the Orangethorpe Avenue/Esperanza Road intersection eliminates wait time caused by passing trains for the 46,000 drivers that use the road every day. Prior to the bridge being constructed, drivers experienced a 5- to 10-minute delay during peak hours as trains passed.
The community also will benefit from enhanced safety from improved pedestrian accessibility and reduced noise because trains will no longer routinely sound their horns as they pass through Imperial Highway.
Imperial Highway is the first among multiple grade separation projects occurring in the county during the coming years. In 2010, construction is anticipated to begin on Placentia Avenue in Placentia and Fullerton.
"These projects are a critical part of improving the movement of goods from our local ports,” said OCTA Chairman Peter Buffa. “They reduce congestion and help the environment by significantly reducing emissions from cars and trucks idling while they wait for trains to pass."
