Johnson Appointed Deputy CEO of OCTA

Industry veteran will take over his new role March 29
ORANGE – Darrell E. Johnson, a transportation industry veteran and longtime supporter of public transit, has been named the new deputy CEO of the Orange County Transportation Authority.

Johnson, who most recently held the position of executive director of rail programs, will take his post March 29. Johnson is replacing Deputy CEO Jim Kenan, who is retiring March 25 after more than 30 years with OCTA.

“Darrell has done an outstanding job as a member of OCTA’s executive management team and his experience in transportation planning and operations, coupled with his tremendous leadership abilities will serve this agency and the people of Orange County well,” said OCTA Chairman Jerry Amante, also the mayor of Tustin.

During his nearly seven years at OCTA, Johnson has held positions of increasing responsibility including management of local, state and federal funding programs and project development for freeway projects.

As head of OCTA’s rail program, Johnson’s responsibilities have included the Metrolink expansion, grade crossing safety and grade separation programs, high-speed rail development, fixed-guideway projects, and development and implementation of regional rail gateways and facilities including the Anaheim Regional Transportation Intermodal Center.

Johnson has devoted his career to improving public transportation, spending 12 years at Amtrak prior to joining OCTA. During his time at Amtrak, Johnson held positions on operations and planning and contributed to the development of passenger rail service in California, Oregon, Washington and British Columbia.

“I’m honored to accept this position and have the opportunity to continue contributing to OCTA’s long-standing tradition of visionary thinking and delivering effective transportation solutions for our residents,” Johnson said.

A Southern California native, Johnson has a degree in political science and administrative studies from the University of California, Riverside. He lives in Mission Viejo, with his wife, Tina and their two daughters, ages 9 and 5.
