OCTA Encourages People to Safely ‘Bike There’ in May

The active transportation challenge allows people to pledge to ride their bike to work, for fun, for fitness and for safety for a chance to win prizes, stay healthy and help Orange County’s air quality in the process

ORANGE – The Orange County Transportation Authority is encouraging people of all ages, including those working from home, to stay active and get outdoors to safely travel by bicycle during the month of May – Bike Month.

OCTA is leading a monthlong challenge called Bike There 2022. Participants are encouraged to pledge to ride as many days as they can during May – for better health and to discover the fun and convenience of active transportation.

Bike to Work Week is traditionally held in May. This year, OCTA is holding the monthlong challenge to “bike there,” recognizing that the coronavirus (COVID-19) pandemic has changed the way many people work, and that many people continue to work remotely, at least some of the time.

Orange County has plenty of options for cyclists, from the foothills to the beaches, with more than 1,000 miles of bikeways. Also, the more people choose to ride a bike as an alternative to getting behind the wheel of a car, the better it is for Orange County’s air quality.

During the Bike There challenge, participants can pledge to follow that week’s theme such as:

  • Bike to Safety Week (May 1-7): Focusing on the rules for safe cycling
  • Bike to Fun Week (May 8-14): Encouraging riders to bike instead of taking a car to the next fun outing
  • Bike to Work Week (May 15-21): Riders are encouraged to ride a bicycle the full way – or partially – to get to work
  • Bike to Fitness Week (May 22-28): Explore some of Orange County’s many great cycling trails for a healthy dose of exercise.

Pledges to ride during any or all of the themed weeks can be made online. The more you pledge, the more chances to win. To pledge, visit www.octa.net/bikemonth.

Participants in the pledge can earn up to five entries in a raffle at the end of the month for prizes. Those prizes, sponsored by Spectrumotion and Jax Bicycle Centers, include a Trek Dual Sport 1 and a Bontrager Ion Pro RT Front Bike Light.

OCTA also encourages cyclists to bike smart and stay safe. For bicycle safety tips, please visit www.octa.net/bike.
