OCTA Encourages People to Share the Ride This Week

Participants in annual Ridershare Week can win prizes pledging to take the bus, train, vanpool, bike or walk to work instead of driving alone

ORANGE – Rideshare Week encourages commuters to give up the solo commute and save time and money by sharing the ride this week through Friday, Oct. 5.

Rideshare Week, promoted by the Orange County Transportation Authority, aims to encourage alternative transportation options such as taking the bus or the train, or going by bike or vanpool.

OCTA joins other transportation agencies across the region and the country in promoting the annual Ridershare Week.

Those who go online to www.octa.net/ridershareweek can pledge to share the ride, and they can enter for a chance to win fitness-related prizes, including a Fitbit Charge 2 and an Apple Watch.

More information is available at on the website, including information on how to find a ride match for a vanpool or even to ride a bike.

Commuters accustomed to traveling in a car alone to work are encouraged to ride a Metrolink train, carpool, vanpool, walk or cycle to work instead, or to take an OC Bus.

OC Buses provide convenient and affordable trips to nearly every part of Orange County. For more information on schedules, visit www.OCBus.com.

Commuters are also encouraged to consider sharing the ride by setting up a vanpool.

Rideshare saves time, money and helps improve the environment. A carpool or vanpool reduces transportation costs by 50 to 75 percent, lowers greenhouse gas emissions by 1,600 pounds per year, and provides more time at home, instead of on the road.

For more information about vanpools, visit octa.net/vanpool.

OCTA hopes that people who participate during Ridershare Week and give alternate forms of transportation a try will discover the lasting benefits and continue sharing the ride throughout the year.

But those who want a chance at winning a prize must make their pledge by 11 p.m. on Friday, Oct. 5.
