OCTA Wins ASCE Awards for Transportation Projects

Four projects are honored by ASCE-OC in multiple categories

ORANGE – The Orange County Transportation Authority has been honored by the American Society of Civil Engineers, Orange County, for four projects, including Project of the Year for the Anaheim Regional Transportation Intermodal Center.

Each year the ASCE-OC recognizes the finest civil engineers and projects throughout Orange County. This year, OCTA’s projects are being recognized in four categories.

The Sand Canyon Avenue Grade Separation, a $64 million project that lowered Sand Canyon Avenue under the railroad tracks and widened the roadway, won the award in the bridge category. The newly constructed bridge opened to motorists in July 2014 and improved safety and mobility for the traveling public.

The SR-57 project was honored in the transportation category. In an effort to improve traffic flow, a northbound lane was added from north of the SR-91 near Orangethorpe Avenue in Placentia to Lambert Road in Brea and a three-mile stretch between Katella Avenue and Lincoln Avenue in Anaheim. These improvements helped to reduce congestion, increase traffic flow and enhance the safety of the freeway.

The Anaheim Regional Transportation Intermodal Center (ARTIC) was recognized in two categories. The project was honored in the structural engineering category and was also awarded Project of the Year.

The 67,000-square-foot transportation hub broke ground in September 2012 and opened to the public in December 2014. The transportation hub connects the services of OCTA, Metrolink, Amtrak, Anaheim Resort Transportation, Greyhound, taxis, bikes, and other public/private transportation providers making travel throughout Orange County and other areas of California easy and convenient.

OCTA will be presented with the honors at the ASCE-OC annual awards dinner on Feb. 18.
