Measure M project in the initial phase to explore widening the freeway between I-5 and SR-55
ORANGE – The public is invited to an open house to learn about proposed improvements to the San Diego (I-405) Freeway between the Santa Ana (I-5) and Costa Mesa (SR-55) freeways in Irvine.
The Orange County Transportation Authority in conjunction with Caltrans is holding the meeting from 5 to 8 p.m. on Tuesday, Nov. 3 in multipurpose room No. 2 at the University Community Park, 1 Beech Tree Lane in Irvine as part of the environmental phase of the improvement project.
Held in an open house format, the meeting will provide members of the public with the opportunity to learn about the project’s scope, as well as to provide comments about increasing capacity, improving operations and any potential environmental impacts.
Currently, more than 350,000 vehicles travel through that stretch of the I-405, and that number is expected to reach more than 400,000 by 2030. The 8.5-mile stretch connects homes, employment centers, recreational attractions, shopping malls, medical centers, universities and John Wayne Airport.
The project is part of Measure M, the half-cent sales tax approved by voters for transportation improvements. This initial stage of the project will study the benefits and potential environmental impacts of increasing capacity on the I-405 by adding one or two general-purpose lanes in each direction.
While early in the process, the public is encouraged to get familiar with the project and provide input, which is essential to ensuring a successful outcome.
The project’s environmental phase is expected to be completed in late 2017, with construction to follow.
