Pile Driving To Begin On San Diego Freeway (I-405) in Orange County

Starting Wednesday Dec. 19 pile driving will commence to reconstruct the Seal Beach Boulevard Bridge

 Dec. 13, 2012

ORANGE – As part of Orange County Transportation Authority’s (OCTA) West County Connectors project pile driving will occur on the I-405 freeway to reconstruct the Seal Beach Boulevard Bridge.

The pile driving will begin on Wednesday, Dec. 19 and will continue sporadically on weekdays between 7 a.m. and 4:30 p.m. over the next several months.

Pile driving is a common method of constructing bridge foundations. To support the bridge, steel or concrete beams are driven into the ground by a large hammer mounted on a crane, until they reach a hard layer of earth beneath the foundation. Please be advised this activity may be loud and disruptive because of to vibration and pounding.

The $277 million West County Connectors project will improve traffic flow by directly connecting carpool lanes on I-405, I-605 and SR-22. In addition, a second carpool lane will be constructed on I-405 between SR-22 and I-605. The 6-mile project traverses the cities of Garden Grove, Westminster, Seal Beach, Los Alamitos, Long Beach and the community of Rossmoor.
