Rideshare Week 2009 Kicking Off In Orange County

Commuters can pledge to participate and tweet about their commutechoice for a chance to win up to $4,500 in travel certificates

ORANGE – It’s time for commuters to get their share of the savings by giving up driving solo and joining the ride during this year’s Rideshare Week, Oct. 5 to 9.
Commuters can pledge to take the bus or train, vanpool, carpool or ride a bike for a chance to win up to $4,500 in travel vouchers from American Express.
The more days during the week commuters rideshare, the more chances they have to win. Participants may enter by mail or online at www.octa.net/sharetheride.
“Commuter solutions is an important answer to traffic jams and breaking the one care-one person culture,” said Peter Buffa, chairman of the Orange County Transportation Authority. “We want Orange County to know that there is a way to make your commute to and from work easier than it is today, and OCTA’s new Web site can help find the option that works best for you.”
Commuters connected to Twitter are encouraged to tweet about how they’re sharing the ride during the promotional week with the hash tag #OCstr. Those who tweet will be entered for a chance to win prizes such as video services provided by Morgan Brown with Turn Here, an internet and video production and advertising company.
Barbara Pena found biking to work helps get her morning started. Each day she rides three miles traveling to and from work. “It’s really a lot of fun and wakes you up in the morning. By the time I get to my desk, I’m ready to start my day,” said Pena.
Rideshare Week is part of OCTA’s Commuter Solutions program, which provides employers and employees the most efficient and economical ways to get to work on time. More than 50,000 employees were represented by employee transportation coordinators at this year’s Rideshare Week kick-off meeting.
